Welcome to Community Conversations: Modern Natural Baby! Jim Shaffer sits down to talk with John Murray and Emily Murray, owners of Modern Natural Baby in Ferndale, about their experiences as small business owners.

Emily and John are the incredible business owners behind the shop that we all love and frequent, Modern Natural Baby on 9 Mile in Ferndale. Modern Natural Baby carries clothing, toys, educational items, strollers, car seats, and everything in between.

While their core business is toys and clothes for newborns to kids up to age five, to keep business up during COVID, they’ve had to focus on a larger range of items. People joke they’ve become Modern Natural Baby and Sidewalk Chalk, or Modern Natural Baby and Puzzles! While they always carried 1,000-piece puzzles, before COVID they maybe had four in stock at any time. Due to demand, Modern Natural Baby has expanded to carry an amazingly large selection and style of any puzzle imaginable. They’ve also began carrying activity books and educational Brain Quest workbooks for kids learning at home. In a fabulous show of community support and partnership, Ferndale Public Schools bought Brain Quest workbooks from Modern Natural Baby for every student in the district from Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.
